Executive Summary
Chamber Honored for its Support of Public Education
On November 1, Philadelphia’s School Reform Commission held its inaugural Pillar of Education ceremony, honoring 12 regional and citywide organizations, individuals, businesses and foundations for extraordinary support of public education in Philadelphia. A Pillar of Partnership Award was presented to the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and its member companies that are partners in the school district’s early literacy initiatives through the Chamber’s support of The Read to Me Early Literacy Program. The Chamber shares this award with Bank of America, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Lockheed Martin, UPS and Wal-Mart.
Co-chaired by Governor Tom Ridge, the awards were created to recognize partners who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, dedication and service to our children and communities in the School District of Philadelphia. Through this read aloud program, children ages three to seven enhance their vocabulary, develop higher-order thinking skills, learn to become fluent readers, increase their verbal skills and develop a sense of reading for enjoyment. It allows children who do not have regular access to high-quality reading materials the opportunity to open their worlds to a wide variety of knowledge and experiences.
Annual Regional Congressional Delegation Reception on December 11
With the General Election just hours away, the TV airwaves, headlines and inboxes are brimming with the predictions of political pundits and pollsters. Most agree that change is in the air, especially at the national level. Some are even suggesting that a shift in control of the United States Congress is possible.
This year, it may be more important than ever for you and your business to be represented at the Chamber’s Regional Congressional Delegation Reception. This annual event is an excellent opportunity to develop and maintain strong relationships with our local Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. We hope that you will join us on Monday, December 11, at 5:30 PM at the Westin Philadelphia Hotel.
